Intra-Abdominal Infection

Graphs: Active against IAIs

† Data shown for MERREM I.V. are representative of 4 trials, whereas data shown for imipenem/cilastatin are from 2 trials in which it was a comparator. Data from clinical trials comparing the clinical and bacteriological efficacy and safety of empirical monotherapy of MERREM I.V. (n=146 evaluable patients; 4 trials) with imipenem/cilastatin (n=65 evaluable patients; 2 trials). MERREM I.V. is equivalent to imipenem/cilastatin.
‡ 7 or more days after completion of therapy.

Table: Clinical Response at Follow-Up: IAIs

§ (n=number of patients with satisfactory response; N=number of clinically evaluable patients)
// Data based on end-of-therapy (MERREM I.V., mean duration of therapy 10.7 days; imipenem/cilastatin, mean duration of therapy 11.5 days) and follow-up results at 2 and 4 weeks posttherapy.
¶ Data based on follow-up results at 2 to 4 weeks posttherapy.
# Data based on follow-up results at least 30 days posttherapy.
** Data shown for MERREM I.V. are representative of all 4 trials, whereas data shown for imipenem/cilastatin are from the 2 trials in which it was a comparator.

Table: Bacteriological Response at Follow-Up: IAIs

†† (n=number of patients with satisfactory response; N=number of clinically evaluable patients)
‡‡ Data based on follow-up results at 2 to 4 weeks posttherapy.
a Data based on end-of-therapy (MERREM I.V., mean duration of therapy 10.7 days; imipenem/cilastatin, mean duration of therapy 11.5 days) and follow-up results at 2 and 4 weeks posttherapy.
b Data based on follow-up results at least 30 days posttherapy.
c Four controlled clinical trials in patients with complicated IAIs were conducted. One study was conducted in the United States and compared to meropenem to the combination of clindamycin and tobramycin. Three studies were conducted in Europe; meropenem was compared with imipenem (two trials) and cefotaxime/metronidazole (one trial). Using strict evaluability criteria, clinical and microbiological responses were assessed at the follow-up visit. Data shown for MERREM I.V. are representative of all 4 trials, whereas data shown for imipenem/cilastatin are from the 2 trials in which it was a comparator.
